What is Psoriasis?

In google terms, psoriasis isn't fully understood. An inflammatory autoimmune disease that attacks our largest organ. What is it? You got it, our skin! It is a disease that is incurable and commonly covers your scalp, elbows, knees and in severe cases, the whole body. Our skin cells tend to grow faster than normal and our infection-fighting cells attack our healthy cells mistakenly.

In my words, psoriasis is a skin disease that takes control of everything from your body, to your mentality and your physical appearance IF you let it. I sure do. Psoriasis comes in waves and absolutely blindsides the CRAP out of you! One day you could be clear and the next, you are playing 'Where's Wally' with part of your body that isn't covered. Psoriasis isn't something that can be camouflaged by fake tan or makeup. It is itchy, scaly, red, flakey, bumpy, patchy and the list goes on.

There are many triggers and trust me, some are so simple yet some have you question, honestly how? My trigger over the years has been stress due to severe bullying. Other triggers include infections like step throat, environmental factors such as dry and cold conditions, diet and heavy alcohol consumption

The main types of psoriasis are:

Plaque psoriasis - most common type, dry and itchy skin patches.

Guttate psoriasis - mainly affects children and young adults with small drop shaped spots covering arms and legs caused by bacterial infections

Nail psoriasis - affecting your nails and toe nails by discolouration and abnormal nail growth. In severe cases, your nails can crumble.

Inverse psoriasis - commonly affects areas that worsen with friction and sweat such as the breast, groin and buttocks.

I currently have Plaque, Inverse and Guttate psoriasis and needless to say, they all suck but it's a working progress.
